The format is simpler than it looks: a regular canned seltzer, soda or lemonade with a measured amount of hemp-derived Delta 9 THC blended in. Our Good Time cans carry 10mg of Delta 9 THC each, are agave sweetened, and cost $1.95 a can.
This guide covers what is in the can, why drinks often work faster than gummies, how much to drink first, the safety basics, and the federal law change on December 11, 2026. You must be 21 or older to buy; nothing here is medical advice.
THC Drinks for Beginners: Key Points
The Short Version
- A hemp THC drink carries real Delta 9 THC; it counts as hemp today because the federal definition measures THC as a percentage of weight, not as milligrams per can.
- In a 2022 industry-funded randomized trial, a 10mg emulsified THC dose peaked in the blood in just under an hour, versus more than 5 hours in MCT oil.
- Clinical dosing guidance starts THC at 2.5 to 5mg, so a 10mg can is a full dose for a beginner: drink half, wait an hour, then decide.
- Do not drive, skip alcohol, store cans away from kids and pets, and expect THC to show on a drug test.
- Under Public Law 119-37, as delayed by H.R. 6500, a 0.4mg total THC per container cap takes effect December 11, 2026, and a 10mg can is 25 times that. State rules vary; check yours, and we will update this post as the law changes.
What is a hemp THC drink?
A hemp THC drink is a seltzer, soda or lemonade infused with Delta 9 THC extracted from hemp rather than marijuana. Delta 9 is the same molecule either way; the hemp label comes from the plant, which today must have a Delta 9 THC concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis, per 7 U.S.C. 1639o.
Hemp-derived Delta 9 THC
The same Delta 9 molecule found in marijuana, extracted from hemp that meets the federal definition.
Water-soluble THC
THC oil broken into tiny droplets suspended in water so it mixes into a drink and absorbs faster.
Total THC
Delta 9 plus THCA and other THC forms combined, the measure the federal definition uses from December 11, 2026.
That percentage is why a can could carry a meaningful dose. The definition covers the plant and its derivatives, extracts and cannabinoids at not more than 0.3 percent Delta 9 THC by weight, and measured against a whole can of liquid, 10mg of THC is a tiny fraction of a percent. That reading put 10mg hemp drinks on shelves, and it is what Congress rewrote in 2025.
All three Good Time flavors, Lemonade, Sparkling Strawberry Lemonade and Old Fashioned Cherry Soda, carry 10mg of Delta 9 THC per can, are agave sweetened, and use QWIK Liquid's water-soluble technology. Every batch is third-party lab tested, with the Certificate of Analysis on our Lab Results page.
Why do THC drinks kick in faster than edibles?
THC is an oil. Swallowed in a gummy or oil-based tincture, it must be digested, absorbed through the gut and pass through the liver before much of it reaches your blood. A 2016 RTI Press review puts oral THC bioavailability at roughly 6 to 10 percent, with first effects typically 30 to 90 minutes after eating.

Beverage makers get around that with emulsification: the THC oil is broken into droplets small enough to stay suspended in water, which is what water-soluble means on a can. In a 2022 randomized, triple-blind trial of 32 adults with prior cannabis experience, a 10mg THC emulsion peaked in the blood in just under an hour on average, versus more than 5 hours for 10mg in MCT oil. The lag before absorption began was about 1.5 hours shorter, and total THC absorbed over 48 hours was not significantly different.
That is one single-dose trial, funded by the company that makes the emulsion, and the authors report wide variation between participants, so treat faster onset as often, not always. Your last meal, your metabolism and your history with cannabis all move the clock. For how the droplets are made, read our post on Delta 9 bioavailability and emulsification.
How much THC should a beginner drink?
Less than a full can, for most people. A 2021 expert consensus on dosing medical cannabis for chronic pain in the Journal of Cannabis Research starts THC at 2.5mg a day and raises it by 2.5mg every 2 to 7 days; its fastest protocol starts at 2.5 to 5mg. MacCallum and Russo (2018) likewise say to begin at modest levels and titrate slowly over as much as two weeks.
Those are medical frameworks, not party rules, but the numbers translate. A 10mg can is two to four starting doses. If this is your first time, pour half the can over ice, drink it, and give it a full hour before you consider the rest. Start low and go slow still holds.
The consensus paper also describes a 2020 crossover study of 17 adults abstinent for at least 60 days: 10mg of oral THC produced noticeable drug effects, while 25mg and 50mg produced pronounced effects and impaired thinking and coordination. Two cans in an evening is 20mg, more than most beginners want. We make Good Time cans at 10mg so one can is a complete serving for an experienced adult and a two-step for a beginner: half now, half later.

How long do THC drinks take to kick in and last?
Expect first effects within roughly 30 to 60 minutes, and a full can to last several hours. The CDC says edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours to produce intoxicating effects that can last longer than expected depending on the amount. Emulsified drinks often land on the early side of that window.
The RTI Press review found that edibles peak 2 to 4 hours after ingestion, partly because the liver turns THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a more potent metabolite. Drinks may peak sooner, but do not judge the can at the 20 minute mark.
The classic edible mistake, the National Institute on Drug Abuse notes, is taking more because the first serving has not shown up yet. With a drink that mistake is easy. Set the half-empty can down, note the time, and do something else for an hour.
Are THC drinks safe to mix with alcohol?
No, and that is the first of five safety rules. The CDC notes that using cannabis and alcohol together can increase impairment, and a 10mg can is already an intoxicating dose on its own. Second, do not drive. Cannabis slows reaction time and decision making, and the CDC says anyone who intends to drive should use no alcohol or drugs, including cannabis.
Third, store cans where children and pets cannot reach them. The CDC recommends a locked, childproof container, and the ASPCA lists Delta 9 THC as toxic to dogs and cats. Fourth, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medication, or managing a health condition, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first. The FDA reports potential adverse effects of cannabis use in pregnancy and discourages cannabis use while breastfeeding.
Fifth, assume a THC drink can show on a drug test. Urine screens look for the metabolite THC-COOH, and in a 2008 monitored-abstinence study of daily to weekly smokers, the last positive test came 4 to 15 days after last use on average. One can is not daily use, but we cannot promise a clean result; our post on CBD and drug tests explains why. Finally, hemp THC and CBD products are not FDA-evaluated; the only FDA-approved CBD drug is Epidiolex, a prescription seizure medication.
Are THC drinks legal in 2026?
Today, yes at the federal level. The 2018 Farm Bill definition in 7 U.S.C. 1639o is what makes a hemp-derived 10mg can lawful. Signed November 12, 2025, Section 781 of Public Law 119-37 rewrites that definition, effective 365 days after enactment: hemp is measured by total tetrahydrocannabinols, including THCA, and the term excludes any final hemp-derived cannabinoid product containing more than 0.4 milligrams per container of total THC combined with any other cannabinoid that HHS determines has similar effects.
That made the date November 12, 2026. Then H.R. 6500, the appropriations bill signed September 2, 2026 as Public Law 119-103, delayed most of it in Section 2019: until December 11, 2026, the Section 781 amendments apply only to products containing cannabinoids a hemp plant cannot naturally produce. The total THC standard and the 0.4mg cap take effect December 11, 2026. A 10mg can holds 25 times that cap, so on that date a 10mg hemp drink falls outside the federal hemp definition.
Congress may still act. Bills to delay the change to November 2028 (H.R. 7024, S. 3686), repeal it (H.R. 6209), regulate hemp products federally for adults 21 and over (H.R. 9830), or regulate hemp beverages like alcohol with a 5mg per serving limit (H.R. 10079) were in committee as of early September, per Hemp Law Group, and the FDA has not published its promised guidance on what counts as a container. States set their own rules, and some already restrict hemp THC drinks, so check yours before ordering. We will update this post as the rules change.
Trying Your First Hemp THC Drink
Half a can is a fine first step
If you try a THC drink, the recipe is short: pick a 10mg can, pour half, wait an hour, and keep the evening free of cars and cocktails. Good Time Lemonade and Sparkling Strawberry Lemonade are $1.95 a can in 4-packs and 24-packs, for adults 21 and older.
Before you order, check the law in your state and read the Certificate of Analysis for your batch on our Lab Results page. For questions about dosing or how our Delta 9 products are made, our FAQ is the next stop.

THC Drinks and Seltzers Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Will THC Seltzers Get You High?
Yes. Delta 9 THC is the intoxicating cannabinoid in cannabis, and a 10mg can delivers a real dose. How strong it feels depends on your size, last meal, tolerance and how fast you drink. For a beginner, a full 10mg can is a complete dose, not a light one. Start with half.
Will a THC Seltzer Show Up on a Drug Test?
It can. Urine screens detect THC-COOH, the metabolite your body makes from Delta 9 THC, and cannot tell hemp THC from marijuana THC. One drink leaves less metabolite than daily use, but detection windows vary with dose, body composition and frequency. If you are tested for work, assume it will be noticed.
Is 20mg of THC a Lot in a Drink?
For a beginner, yes. Twenty milligrams is four to eight times the 2.5 to 5mg starting dose in medical cannabis guidance, and two of our 10mg cans. Experienced adults may be comfortable there, but drinking 20mg before the first can has arrived is the classic edible mistake. Stay between half a can and one.
Are THC Drinks Still Available?
Yes, as of October 2026. Hemp-derived Delta 9 drinks remain federally lawful under the current hemp definition, and we ship ours to adults 21 and older. That definition changes December 11, 2026, when a 0.4mg total THC per container cap takes effect unless Congress acts again, and some states already restrict hemp THC drinks. Check your state.
