CBD and Alcohol: Is It Safe to Mix Them?

The honest answer is: we don't know yet

Nobody can tell you mixing CBD and alcohol is safe, because the human research is tiny. What we do know: both can make you drowsy, both are processed by your liver, and the safest choice is to keep them apart or ask your doctor.

CBD and Alcohol: Is It Safe to Mix Them?

Here at Partnered Process we hear this question a lot, usually from someone who takes oil in the evening and likes wine with dinner. Most answers online are a sales pitch or a scare story; here is the sourced version.

This guide covers the studies on CBD and alcohol, what the FDA says about CBD, where your liver and medications come in, and what to do if you still plan to have both. Nothing here is medical advice. Hemp CBD products, including ours, are not FDA-evaluated; the only FDA-approved CBD drug is a prescription seizure medicine, Epidiolex.

CBD and Alcohol Key Points

The Short Version

  • A handful of small human studies have tested CBD with alcohol, and none found it made people less impaired or meaningfully changed breath alcohol.
  • The FDA says using CBD with alcohol or other drugs that slow brain activity raises the risk of sedation and injuries.
  • Both are processed by the liver, and the FDA says CBD can cause liver injury, a risk first spotted in the Epidiolex trials.
  • CBD and alcohol each change how your body handles medications, so talk to a pharmacist before stacking all three.
  • Mouse studies suggest CBD cuts drinking, but the first small human trials found it no better than placebo, so it is not a treatment.

What does the research say about CBD and alcohol?

The study everyone cites is from 1979. Ten healthy volunteers took 200mg of oral CBD, a heavy dose of alcohol (one gram per kilogram), both, or a placebo, one week apart. Alcohol impaired motor and psychomotor performance whether or not CBD was on board. The one surprise: breath-estimated blood alcohol was lower in the combined group, even though people were just as impaired. A second 1979 study of 15 volunteers, at a much smaller CBD dose, found no effect on performance or blood alcohol.

10 peopleThe most cited human study of CBD with alcohol, published in Psychopharmacology in 1979, enrolled ten healthy volunteers.

That finding has circulated for decades as if it were protective. A Colorado State University team re-tested it in a crossover pilot published in 2023: 36 heavy drinkers took placebo, 30mg or 200mg of CBD before a standard dose of alcohol. Breath alcohol twenty minutes later averaged 0.070, 0.067 and 0.065, and the authors called the differences trivial. A 2026 Phase I study of 50mg and 100mg CBD with alcohol found no change in breath alcohol, subjective effects or impairment four hours after dosing.

The plain summary: in the small human experiments that exist, CBD made nobody less drunk, or more drunk either. One wrinkle runs the other way: a 2020 pharmacokinetic trial found alcohol raised blood levels of the prescription CBD drug about 1.6-fold. None can tell you what happens over months of nightly use or in people who are not healthy adults. That gap is why we land where the FDA lands: caution, and a word with your doctor before you combine them.

Key TakeawaySeveral tiny human studies found CBD did not change alcohol impairment or breath alcohol, and none looked at long-term everyday use.

Why drowsiness is the first thing to worry about

CBD and alcohol share the side effect that causes accidents. The FDA's consumer guidance says that using CBD with alcohol or other drugs that slow brain activity, including medicines for anxiety, panic, stress or sleep, raises the risk of sedation and drowsiness, which can lead to injuries.

Heads UpDo not drive or operate machinery after combining CBD with alcohol. Alcohol impairs you on its own, and the FDA says adding CBD can increase sedation.

In the trials behind Epidiolex, 32 percent of patients reported somnolence or sedation compared with 11 percent on placebo, and the label warns that other nervous system depressants, including alcohol, could potentiate it. Those were high medical doses in children and adults aged 2 to 55 with two rare epilepsies, not a 25mg gummy, but the direction is the point.

Alcohol slows reaction time and dulls judgment, and the 1979 study showed CBD did nothing to offset that. Stacking two things that each make you sleepier is a bad plan on a night you need to drive or watch kids, and anyone already on a sedating medicine should ask a doctor first.

Key TakeawayThe FDA warns that CBD plus alcohol raises sedation risk, so never combine them before driving or anything that needs a clear head.

What CBD and alcohol each do to your liver

Your liver clears both compounds. The FDA states that CBD can cause liver injury, a risk it identified while reviewing Epidiolex, whose label adds that liver enzyme elevations were dose related.

In mice, CBD has looked protective, which excites the internet. A 2014 study found CBD prevented fat buildup in mouse livers after binge alcohol, apparently by reducing oxidative stress. A 2017 study from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism found CBD reduced liver inflammation, fat accumulation and enzyme elevations in mice fed alcohol for weeks plus binges, and the authors called for human trials.

Those are real findings, in mice, at doses that do not translate to a dropper of oil, and no human trial has shown CBD protects a person's liver from drinking. Which is harder on the liver? Heavy drinking has decades of human evidence, from fatty liver to cirrhosis; CBD has a documented risk at high doses and open questions at everyday ones. If you drink regularly and use CBD, tell your doctor, since the FDA notes CBD-related liver injury can go unnoticed without blood tests.

Key TakeawayThe FDA lists liver injury as a CBD risk, mouse studies hint at protection against alcohol, and no human study has settled it.

Medications, CYP450 enzymes and CBD with alcohol

If you take any daily medication, this chapter matters most. The FDA says CBD may increase or decrease the effects of other drugs. The Epidiolex label spells out the mechanism: the liver enzymes CYP3A4 and CYP2C19 break down cannabidiol, and it is predicted to inhibit several others.

CYP450 enzymes

Liver enzymes that break down most medications, alcohol byproducts and cannabinoids, including CBD.

Inhibitor

Something that slows one of those enzymes so a drug lingers in your blood; the FDA predicts CBD inhibits CYP2C8, CYP2C9, CYP2C19 and two UGT enzymes.

Substrate

A drug cleared by a given enzyme, which is why the Epidiolex label advises dose changes for substrates like clobazam.

In plain terms, CBD can slow the breakdown of some medicines so more stays in your blood, and some medicines can do the same to CBD. The label's own examples run from seizure drugs (clobazam, phenytoin, valproate) to the sedatives diazepam and lorazepam, morphine and the antidepressant bupropion. Alcohol then adds its own interactions, especially with anything that already causes drowsiness or stresses the liver.

We cannot tell you how your prescription behaves with CBD, and we would not trust a seller who claims to. A pharmacist can, usually in five minutes. For ours, the full Certificate of Analysis for every batch is published, so your pharmacist can see exactly what is in the bottle.

Key TakeawayCBD and alcohol each change how medications behave, so anyone on a daily prescription should clear the combination with a pharmacist first.

Can CBD help if you are cutting back on drinking?

This question sits behind many Reddit threads. A 2018 study found that daily injected CBD reduced how much alcohol mice chose to drink, lowered their motivation for it and reduced relapse. A 2019 review gathered those findings and called for human trials.

Those trials have started reporting, and the results are sobering. In two NYU Langone trials, 57 adults with alcohol use disorder took 600mg to 1,200mg of CBD a day or placebo for six to eight weeks; both groups cut their drinking sharply, and CBD was no better than placebo. A 2025 pilot of hemp-derived CBD in 44 people found no reduction in drinks per drinking day either. On October 7, 2026, ClinicalTrials.gov listed 14 registered studies of cannabidiol for alcohol use disorder, several still recruiting. So far, no trial has shown CBD reduces drinking in people more than placebo, and we will not say it does.

If part of your drinking is the ritual, the glass at the end of the day, a CBD gummy or drink can stand in for the habit without the alcohol. It is a lifestyle choice, not a treatment. If you drink more than you want to, or notice withdrawal when you stop, talk to a doctor; withdrawal can be medically serious.

Key TakeawayMouse studies suggest CBD may cut alcohol intake, the first human trials found it no better than placebo, and it is not a treatment for drinking problems.

How to use CBD responsibly if you also drink

The safest approach is the simplest: do not take them together, and ask your doctor before you change that. If you are a healthy adult on no medications and still want oil and a beer in one evening, a few habits reduce the risks. Keep the alcohol light, space the two by hours, not minutes, and never drive afterward. Start low and go slow on any night you add alcohol.

Pick products that tell you exactly what is in them; the label is part of the safety math. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that over-the-counter CBD products may contain more or less CBD than labeled, and sometimes THC. Every batch we make is third-party tested, so the amount printed on our Partnered Proof labels means what it says.

For anyone pregnant or nursing, the FDA strongly advises against CBD in any form, alcohol aside. Skip the combination if you are under 21, take sedatives or seizure medicines, or have any liver condition. Our Partnered Proof Broad Spectrum Oil is water-soluble and can be added to a drink: sparkling water, tea or juice, not a cocktail, since mixing them makes it harder to track how much of each you have had.

Key TakeawayKeep CBD and alcohol apart when you can, keep servings small when you cannot, buy tested products, and leave the car keys alone.

CBD and Alcohol: Where We Land

Caution first, then good data

We sell CBD for a living, so you might expect us to say it pairs fine with wine. We can't; the evidence is not there yet. A handful of small human studies, a stack of mouse experiments and a clear FDA warning add up to one position: keep them apart when you can, keep both small when you can't, and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you take any medication.

What we can promise is transparency. Every bottle of Partnered Proof oil comes from hemp grown on local Wisconsin and American farms, processed in our USDA Certified Organic, GMP-certified facility, and tested by a third-party lab. Pull up the Certificate of Analysis for your batch before your next conversation with your doctor.

CBD and Alcohol Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Is Harder on the Liver, CBD or Alcohol?

Heavy alcohol use has decades of human evidence linking it to liver disease. CBD has a documented risk of liver enzyme elevations at high prescription doses, flagged by the FDA, and little human data at everyday doses. Mouse studies hint at protection against alcohol-related liver fat, but that has not been shown in people.

What Does CBD Do if You Drink It With Alcohol?

In the small human studies that exist, CBD taken with alcohol did not change how impaired people were, and a Colorado State pilot found only trivial differences in breath alcohol. The main documented effect is added drowsiness; the FDA says the combination raises the risk of sedation and injuries, so never drive after both.

Is CBD a Good Replacement for Alcohol?

As a habit swap, some people report a CBD drink or gummy takes the place of an evening drink. As a treatment for problem drinking, no. Mouse studies found CBD reduced alcohol intake, but the first small human trials found it no better than placebo. If you are struggling to cut back, talk to a doctor.

How Long Should I Wait Between CBD and Alcohol?

No study has defined a safe gap, so we offer caution. Spacing them by several hours beats taking them together, since both cause drowsiness and both are cleared by the liver. Keep the alcohol light, keep your CBD serving small, and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you take any medication.
